The holiness of God is not available to man. For accepted saint’s of God by
a man, it is necessary, that God showed His own glory, it means that He proved to be a saint.

In the temple, Yahweh appears of Isaiah as the King of infinite majesty, as the Creator that fills the earth with His glory, as an object of worship, where only angels can surrounded Him (also only in some degree).
But God which is not available, fills Himself the gap existing between Him and the creatures.

The holiness of God is much more than only one of the attributes of God – it is something characteristic from God in general. Therefore, His Name is holy; giving the word, the Lord refers to His own holiness.

The problem of the nature of holiness in the Bible, it is ultimately the problem of the mystery of God himself.

BIBLE

Exodus 3, 14
14 God said to Moses: I AM WHO AM. He said: Thus shall you say to the children of Israel: HE WHO IS, has sent me to you.

Exodus 19, 3 – 20
3 And Moses went up to God; and the Lord called unto him from the mountain, and said: Thus shall you say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: 4 You have seen what I have done to the Egyptians, how I have carried you upon the wings of eagles, and have taken you to myself. 5 If therefore you will hear my voice, and keep my covenant, you shall be my peculiar possession above all people: for all the earth is mine. 6 And you shall be to me a priestly kingdom, and a holy nation. These are the words you shall speak to the children of Israel. 7 Moses came; and calling together the elders of the people, he declared all the words which the Lord had commanded. 8 And all the people answered together: All that the Lord has spoken, we will do. And when Moses had related the people’s words to the Lord, 9 the Lord said to him: Lo, now will I come to you in the darkness of a cloud, that the people may hear me speaking to you, and may believe you for ever. And Moses told the words of the people to the Lord. 10 And he said to him: Go to the people, and sanctify them today, and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments. 11 And let them be ready against the third day; for on the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people, upon Mount Sinai. 12 And you shall appoint certain limits to the people round about, and you shall say to them: Take heed that you not go up into the mount, and that you touch not the borders thereof: every one that touches the mount, dying he shall die.
13 No hands shall touch him, but he shall be stoned to death, or he shall be shot through with arrows: whether it be beast, or man, he shall not live. When the trumpet shall begin to sound, then let them go up into the mount. 14 And Moses came down from the mount to the people, and sanctified them. And when they had washed their garments, 15 he said to them: Be ready against the third day, and come not near your wives. 16 And now the third day had come, and the morning appeared: and behold thunders began to be heard, and lightning to flash, and a very thick cloud to cover the mount, and the noise of the trumpet sounded exceeding loud; and the people that was in the camp, feared. 17 And when Moses had brought them forth to meet God, from the place of the camp, they stood at the bottom of the mount. 18 And all Mount Sinai was on a smoke: because the Lord had come down upon it in fire, and the smoke arose from it as out of a furnace: and all the mount was terrible. 19 And the sound of the trumpet grew by degrees louder and louder, and was drawn out to a greater length: Moses spoke, and God answered him. 20 And the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai, in the very top of the mount, and he called Moses unto the top thereof. And when he had gone up thither,

[And Moses went up to God… Moses went up to mount Sinai, where God spoke to him. (Challoner)]

Exodus 33, 18 – 23
18 And he said: Show me your glory. 19 He answered: I will show you all good, and I will proclaim in the name of the Lord before you: and I will have mercy on whom I will, and
I will be merciful to whom it shall please me. 20 And again he said: You can not see my face: for man shall not see me, and live. 21 And again he said: Behold there is a place with me, and you shall stand upon the rock. 22 And when my glory shall pass, I will set you in
a hole of the rock, and protect you with my righthand till I pass: 23 And I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back parts: but my face you can not see.

[See my back parts… The Lord by his angel, usually spoke to Moses in the pillar of the cloud; so that he could not see the glory of him that spoke familiarly with him. In the vision here mentioned he was allowed to see something of him, in an assumed corporeal form: not in the face, the rays of which were too bright for mortal eye to bear, but to view him as it were behind, when his face was turned from him. (Challoner)]

Numbers 20, 1 – 13
1 And the children of Israel, and all the multitude came into the desert of Sin, in the first month: and the people abode in Cades. And Mary died there, and was buried in the same place. 2 And the people wanting water, came together against Moses and Aaron: 3 And making a sedition, they said: Would God we had perished among our brethren before the Lord. 4 Why have you brought out the church of the Lord into the wilderness, that both we and our cattle should die? 5 Why have you made us come up out of Egypt, and have brought us into this wretched place which cannot be sowed, nor brings forth figs, nor vines, nor pomegranates, neither is there any water to drink? 6 And Moses and Aaron leaving the multitude, went into the tabernacle of the covenant, and fell flat upon the ground, and cried to the Lord, and said. O Lord God, hear the cry of this people, and open to them your treasure, a fountain of living water, that being satisfied, they may cease to murmur. And the glory of the Lord appeared over them. 7 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 8 Take the rod, and assemble the people together, you and Aaron your brother, and speak to the rock before them, and it shall yield waters. And when you have brought forth water out of the rock, all the multitude and their cattle shall drink. 9 Moses therefore took the rod, which was before the Lord, as he had commanded him, 10 and having gathered together the multitude before the rock, he said to them: Hear, you rebellious and incredulous: Can we bring you forth water out of this rock? 11 And when Moses had lifted up his hand, and struck the rock twice with the rod, there came forth water in great abundance, so that the people and their cattle drank, 12 and the Lord said to Moses and Aaron: Because you have not believed me, to sanctify me before the children of Israel, you shall not bring these people into the land, which I will give them. 13 This is the Water of contradiction, where the children of Israel strove with words against the Lord, and he was sanctified in them.

[* The rock… This rock was a figure of Christ, and the water that issued out from the rock,  of his precious blood, the source of all our good. (Challoner)
* You have not believed, etc… The fault of Moses and Aaron, on this occasion, was a      certain diffidence and weakness of faith; not doubting of God’s power or veracity; but  apprehending the unworthiness of that rebellious and incredulous people, and therefore  speaking with some ambiguity. (Challoner)
* The Water of contradiction… Or strife. Hebrew, Meribah. (Challoner)]

1 Samuel 6, 19 n
19 But he slew of the men of Bethsames, because they had seen the ark of the Lord, and he slew of the people seventy men, and fifty thousand of the common people. And the people lamented, because the Lord had smitten the people with a great slaughter. 20 And the men of Bethsames said: Who shall be able to stand before the Lord this holy God? And to whom shall he go up from us?

2 Samuel 6, 7-11
7 And the indignation of the Lord was enkindled against Oza, and he struck him for his rashness: and he died there before the ark of God. 8 And David was grieved because the Lord had struck Oza, and the name of that place was called: The striking of Oza, to this day. 9 And David was afraid of the Lord that day, saying: How shall the ark of the Lord come to me? 10 And he would not have the ark of the Lord brought in to himself into the city of David: but he caused it to be carried into the house of Obededom the Gethite.
11 And the ark of the Lord abode in the house of Obededom the Gethite three months: and the Lord blessed Obededom, and all his household.

Psalm 22
1 Unto the end, for the morning protection, a psalm for David.
O God my God, look upon me: why have you forsaken me? Far from my salvation are the words of my sins. 3 O my God, I shall cry by day, and you will not hear: and by night, and it shall not be reputed as folly in me. 4 But you dwell in the holy place, the praise of Israel. 5 In you have our fathers hoped: they have hoped, and you have delivered them. 6 They cried to you, and they were saved: they trusted in you, and were not confounded. 7 But
I am a worm, and no man: the reproach of men, and the outcast of the people. 8 All they that saw me have laughed me to scorn: they have spoken with the lips, and wagged the head. 9 He hoped in the Lord, let him deliver him: let him save him, seeing he delights in him. 10 For you are he that have drawn me out of the womb: my hope from the breasts of my mother. 11 I was cast upon you from the womb. From my mother’s womb you are my God, 12 depart not from me. For tribulation is very near: for there is none to help me.
13 Many calves have surrounded me: fat bulls have besieged me. 14 They have opened their mouths against me, as a lion ravening and roaring. 15 I am poured out like water; and all my bones are scattered. My heart has become like wax melting in the midst of my bowels. 16 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue has cleaved to my jaws: and you have brought me down into the dust of death. 17 For many dogs have encompassed me: the council of the malignant has besieged me. They have dug my hands and feet. 18 They have numbered all my bones. And they have looked and stared upon me. 19 They parted my garments amongst them; and upon my vesture they cast lots. 20 But you, O Lord, remove not your help to a distance from me; look towards my defence. 21 Deliver, O God, my soul from the sword: my only one from the hand of the dog. 22 Save me from the lion’s mouth; and my lowness from the horns of the unicorns. 23 I will declare your name to my brethren: in the midst of the church will I praise you. 24 You that fear the Lord, praise him: all you the seed of Jacob, glorify him. 25 Let all the seed of Israel fear him: because he has not slighted nor despised the supplication of the poor man. Neither has he turned away his face form me: and when I cried to him he heard me. 26 With you is my praise in a great church: I will pay my vows in the sight of them that fear him. 27 The poor shall eat and shall be filled: and they shall praise the Lord that seek him: their hearts shall live for ever and ever. 28 All the ends of the earth shall remember, and shall be converted to the Lord: And all the kindreds of the Gentiles shall adore in his sight. 29 For the kingdom is the Lord’s; and he shall have dominion over the nations. 30 All the fat ones of the earth have eaten and have adored: all they that go down to the earth shall fall before him. 31 And to him my soul shall live: and my seed shall serve him. 32 There shall be declared to the Lord a generation to come: and the heavens shall show forth his justice to a people that shall be born, which the Lord has made.

[The words of my sins… That is, the sins of the world, which I have taken upon myself, cry out against me, and are the cause of all my sufferings. (Challoner)]

Psalm 33, 21
21 For in him our heart shall rejoice: and in his holy name we have trusted.

Psalm 71
A psalm for David. Of the sons of Jonadab, and the former captives.
In you, O Lord, I have hoped, let me never be put to confusion: 2 Deliver me in your justice, and rescue me. Incline your ear unto me, and save me. 3 Be unto me a God,
a protector, and a place of strength: that you may make me safe. For you are my firmament and my refuge. 4 Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the sinner, and out of the hand of the transgressor of the law and of the unjust. 5 For you are my patience,
O Lord: my hope, O Lord, from my youth. 6 By you have I been confirmed from the womb: from my mother’s womb you are my protector. Of you I shall continually sing: 7 I have become unto many as a wonder, but you are a strong helper. 8 Let my mouth be filled with praise, that I may sing your glory; your greatness all the day long. 9 Cast me not off in the time of old age: when my strength shall fail, do not forsake me. 10 For my enemies have spoken against me; and they that watched my soul have consulted together, 11 saying: God has forsaken him: pursue and take him, for there is none to deliver him. 12 O God, be not far from me: O my God, make haste to my help. 13 Let them be confounded and come to nothing that detract my soul; let them be covered with confusion and blame that seek my hurt. 14 But I will always hope; and will add to all your praise. 15 My mouth shall show forth your justice; your salvation all the day long. Because I have not known learning,
16 I will enter into the powers of the Lord: O Lord, I will be mindful of your justice alone. 17 You have taught me, O God, from my youth: and till now I will declare your wonderful works. 18 And unto old age and grey hairs: O God, forsake me not, Until I show forth your arm to all the generation that is to come: Your power, 19 and your justice, O God, even to the highest great things you have done: O God, who is like to you? 20 How great troubles have you shown me, many and grievous: and turning you have brought me to life, and have brought me back again from the depths of the earth: 21 You have multiplied your magnificence; and turning to me you have comforted me. 22 For I will also confess to you your truth with the instruments of psaltery: O God, I will sing to you with the harp, you holy one of Israel. 23 My lips shall greatly rejoice, when I shall sing to you; and my soul which you have redeemed. 24 Yea and my tongue shall meditate on your justice all the day; when they shall be confounded and put to shame that seek evils to me.

[* Of the sons of Jonadab… The Rechabites, of whom see Jeremiah 35. By this addition of  the seventy-two interpreters, we gather that this psalm was usually sung in the synagogue,  in the person of the Rechabites, and of those who were first carried away into captivity.  (Challoner)
* Learning… As much as to say, I build not upon human learning, but only on the power  and justice of God. (Challoner)]

Isaiah 5, 24
24 Therefore as the tongue of the fire devours the stubble, and the heat of the flame consumes it: so shall their root be as ashes, and their bud shall go up as dust: for they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and have blasphemed the word of the Holy One of Israel.

Isaiah 6, 1 – 5
In the year that King Ozias died, I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne high and elevated: and his train filled the temple. 2 Upon it stood the seraphims: the one had six wings, and the other had six wings: with two they covered his face, and with two they covered his feet, and with two they flew. 3 And they cried one to another, and said: Holy, holy, holy, the Lord God of hosts, all the earth is full of his glory, 4 and the lintels of the doors were moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: Woe is me, because I have held my peace; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people that has unclean lips, and I have seen with my eyes the King the Lord of hosts.

Isaiah 10, 20
20 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and they that shall escape of the house of Jacob, shall lean no more upon him that strikes them: but they shall lean upon the Lord the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

Isaiah 17, 7
7 In that day man shall bow down himself to his Maker, and his eyes shall look to the Holy One of Israel.

Isaiah 41, 14 – 20
14 Fear not, you worm of Jacob, you that are dead of Israel: I have helped you, says the Lord: and your Redeemer the Holy One of Israel. 15 I have made you as a new thrashing wain, with teeth like a saw: you shall thrash the mountains, and break them in pieces: and shall make the hills as chaff. 16 You shall fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them: and you shall rejoice in the Lord, in the Holy One of Israel you shall be joyful. 17 The needy and the poor seek for waters, and there are none: their tongue has been dry with thirst. I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. 18 I will open rivers in the high hills, and fountains in the midst of the plains: I will turn the desert into pools of waters, and the impassable land into streams of waters. 19 I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, and the thorn, and the myrtle, and the olive tree: I will set in the desert the fir tree, the elm, and the box tree together: 20 That they may see and know, and consider, and understand together that the hand of the Lord has done this, and the Holy One of Israel has created it.

Ezekiel 28, 25 n
25 Thus says the Lord God: When I shall have gathered together the house of Israel out of the people among whom they are scattered: I will be sanctified in them before the Gentiles: and they shall dwell in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob. 26 And they shall dwell therein secure, and they shall build houses, and shall plant vineyards, and shall dwell with confidence, when I shall have executed judgments upon all that are their enemies round about: and they shall know that I am the Lord their God.

Ezekiel 38, 21 nn
21 And I will call in the sword against him in all my mountains, says the Lord God: every man’s sword shall be pointed against his brother. 22 And I will judge him with pestilence, and with blood, and with violent rain, and vast hailstones: I will rain fire and brimstone upon him, and upon his army, and upon the many nations that are with him. 23 And I will be magnified, and I will be sanctified: and I will be known in the eyes of many nations and they shall know that I am the Lord.

Hosea 11, 9
9 I will not execute the fierceness of my wrath: I will not return to destroy Ephraim: because I am God, and not man: the holy one in the midst of you, and I will not enter into the city.

Amos 2, 7
7 They bruise the heads of the poor upon the dust of the earth, and turn aside the way of the humble: and the son and his father have gone to the same young woman, to profane my holy name.

Amos 4, 2
2 The Lord God has sworn by his holiness, that lo, the days shall come upon you, when they shall lift you up on pikes, and what shall remain of you in boiling pots.

Habakkuk 3, 3
3 God will come from the south, and the holy one from mount Pharan: His glory covered the heavens, and the earth is full of his praise.

[God will come from the south, etc… God himself will come to give us his law, and to conduct us into the true land of promise: as heretofore he came from the South (in the Hebrew Theman) and from mount Pharan to give his law to his people in the desert (see Deuteronomy 33:2). (Challoner)]

1 John 4, 18
18 Fear is not in charity: but perfect charity casts out fear, because fear has sin. And he that fears is not perfected in charity.

[Fear is not in charity, etc… Perfect charity, or love, banishes human fear, that is, the fear of men; as also all perplexing fear, which makes men mistrust or despair of God’s mercy; and that kind of servile fear, which makes them fear the punishment of sin more than the offence offered to God. But it no way excludes the wholesome fear of God’s judgments, so often recommended in holy writ; nor that fear and trembling, with which we are told to work out our salvation (Philippians 2:12).
